JEFF SLOAN art: my mission
Thank you for visiting Jeff Sloan Art. I hope you have a
truly wonderful experience as you enjoy my artwork and ideas.
As an artist, my primary interest is to share my creative ideas, be they paintings, poems or songs with as many people as possible and to make a little money along the way. Since people are the key to my own success, I naturally want to help them as well. Art represents ideas and ideas drive the human world. If you are like me, you are not very impressed by the state of that world at this particular time in our evolution, nor if I'm truthful, in the state of art itself.
I want to change the way society views art. Art is a tool for change. Art is not a toilet in the middle of an empty, white-walled room! How is it possible to make things better? The ideas expressed by many modern artists, if implemented, would certainly improve the way our world works. The main idea I have personally is that governments should "Guarantee Survival" for all of their citizens. Let's face it, not one single existing government in the history of humankind can lay claim to this accomplishment and in truth it is a very simple and achievable goal, especially in today's technological haven. I'm not saying they need to eliminate the natural fact of people growing old and dying, I'm talking about the taxes we pay being used to provide basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter for all people, regardless of social status. Only luxury should cost money, and people value luxury to such an extent that this would not threaten capitalism. In short, the existing system is flawed and causes great harm to many people and we simply aren't doing enough to prevent the harms from being caused.
The change I want to see in our world involves a leap forward in human unity. Countries working together to solve some of the most persistent and pestilent problems of our time. We as a species are in a rare position: We could wipe out starvation, homelessness, common disease, malnutrition and a stew of other problems humankind has faced since the dawn of our existence. But we don't. Have you ever asked why?
I have and the answers are frustrating! There is: No global plan for change. Excessive corporate greed. Ulterior personal motives by the people in positions to affect the most good. Fear of Change. Ignorance. Laziness...and of course, the pursuit of monetary dominance.
That last one is truly ugly, but all of the above are the enemy of my art. While I could never claim to be trying to stamp these out single handedly, I will try to explain my simple idea for improving the global situation, such as it is:
We, (all of us), need to get together on ideas that can affect positive change in the lives of real people. This idea should be the primary instruction that drives your every day. "How can I do a little something extra to make things better for all of us, right now?" The answer may be as simple as conducting a survey or joining an organization that brings aid to those in need. It could be as simple as refusing to buy that item from the business that abuses its people, or destroys small business' in our communities, or acts irresponsibly towards our environment; or it could be as complex as writing a serious letter of complaint to your local government representative and following through to insist that it is taken seriously and change is forthcoming. One thing that must be clear, those who agree with my ideas also agree that violence is NEVER the right answer. I'm as excited for change as the next person, but that is never an excuse to use hurtful methods to achieve our goals. We want to change the way victories are won, not add to the growing list of problems by becoming just another phony power-seeker.
I try very hard to incorporate these values into my pictures. That means that if you purchase a print or an original from Jeff Sloan Art, you are declaring that you share the goal of improving the human situation, for all of us and you are doing your part. It is important to note that Jeff Sloan Art is not a charity. I do not believe that charity does enough to prevent the problem. I am about education and action. Ask yourself which is more effective for change: Donating money to help fight a disease, or standing up as a unified voice and letting the powers-that-be know that we insist that the drugs used to treat the disease are cost-regulated and made affordable to anyone who needs them? I honestly believe that the answer is both. "Give a person a fish and they will eat for a day, teach a person to fish and they will eat for a lifetime." That is a core value we all need to embrace. The money for my art will be used to help further the cause of my art, to create more art that can affect more people with our positive message of change. The potential power in that idea is greater than any singular charitable donation could ever be. If you are a representative of a charity, I would still love to speak with you. I would absolutely love to create work for charity at no cost to the organization, provided the money is being used to help people who are in need. I am particularly fond of charities that benefit sick children or that use art as a healing tool.
