Killer Duality
By Jeff Sloan
I live as two persons
Neither one that the other has seen.
I sleep in a manger
of refuse that's perfectly clean.
Can you dance in the waters
that leak from the light in my brain?
I'm building a rocket
to take me much higher than pain.
This duality is killing me
I can't separate
myself from the other men I have been.
My life is a train station
welcome to hobo's and queen's.
I'll bet they play rummy
while rum is a scarecrow's disease.
Far removed from our mothers
We bend in the faintest of breeze.
And I in my rocket ship
burn out before I can scream.
This duality is killing me
I can't separate
myself from the ones that I still want to be.
My world is a nightmare in daytime
at night time a dream.
I've seen all the dancers
the daylight trance-walkers can't see.
I've held my breath farther
than long distance divers can breathe.
My mind is a rocket ship
landing in orbits
of long distance divers
and daylight trance-walkers
my nightmare in duality.

Ever feel trapped in a life you aren't sure that you want anymore? I think we all feel that from time to time. This poem is about that, but it also makes the case that you can't separate the essence of who you are from your day-to-day and that, to me at least, is a good thing. We are always ourselves, no matter how terrible or difficult our moods. The key is to invite more from yourself. Don't get lost in an escape plan. The answer, I believe, is always within ourselves to discover.
Peace, love and joy from me to you on this beautiful spring day. I hope you liked the poem:)
